Rainfall Records

by Iris Y. Borg

The graph below shows the annual rainfall measured in inches on The Sea Ranch meadows between the years 1970 and 2005 as published in the Independent Coast Observer of Gualala, CA. The trend line running across the plot is a simple fit to the data over the 34-year interval.

The rainfall year begins July 1 and ends the following June 30. The measurements were made by members of the MacLaughlin family using a precise, standard gauge that is read and emptied at least weekly. Ken Holmes has measured rainfall at a site on the meadow 1/4 mile south of the MacLaughlin home since 2003.

Considerable variation in rainfall is recorded at The Sea Ranch especially as a function of elevation. The Sea Ranch Ridge receives perhaps 10-15 inches more than the meadows as judged by the difference recorded between rainfall in the town of Gualala and the higher Gualala Ridge.
