Species Description
Northern River Otter

The River Otter (Lutra canadensis) lives along banks of local rivers. Don't confuse it up here on the North Coast for a Sea Otter, which does not range this far north.  River otters travel long distances down water courses (dry or flowing) to fish in the ocean. An otter family was seen to drown and eat a water bird in the Gualala River estuary. Mostly seen with fish along the inter-tidal areas of the ocean.

The River Otter young are born in spring and families are often seen at the ocean edges.
