Species Description
Madrone Flowers

The russet bark of the broadleaf evergreen Pacific Madrone (Arbutus menziesii)is c omplemented in spring by many dense clusters of small, bell shaped flowers.   Last year’s leaves frequently turn maroon before falling off in late spring, to be followed in late summer by clusters of small, orange-red berries.
Blackberry

The California blackberry (Rubus ursinus) is much gentler than the aggressive, introduced Himalayan version, having smaller spicules on the thinner vine and growing as much along the ground as climbing into shrubs. The white flowers and small berries take a bit of looking to find.
