Disaster Shelter Drill

The Del Mar Center has been designated to be the first Disaster Shelter to be opened should The Sea Ranch community be affected by a catastrophic event. To prepare for such an incident, on July 12th, fifty-four Sea Ranch Disaster Response Volunteers and the Anchor Bay Amateur Radio Club came together to set up the Del Mar Center as a Disaster Shelter, using the scenario that a 7.5 earthquake had occurred on the North California Coast. It was hard work, but spirits were high, attitudes positive, and teamwork flourished. This is how it all went down:

Prior to opening any shelter many items must be checked for safety and usability. Chris Howard, Directory of Safety and Security, reviews opening criteria with Shelter Managers Joyce Perkins, Paula Smith and Joanne Angerame. Outside parking areas are inspected for tripping hazards. Locations of the generator and propane tanks are reviewed as well as the recording of fuel levels. General inspections followed to note condition of plumbing, electrical and various rooms within the shelter.

At 9AM, everyone gathered in the DMC Hall for a quick briefing then divided into their perspective groups: Medical, Food, Animal, Registration and Dormitory, and Information and Communications.

While supplies were pulled from storage and transported to the facilities, groups prepared for off-loading.

First-priority for supply delivery was given to the Medical/Surgical area where the medical team immediately organized to receive patients, followed by setting up the Medical Registration/Triage section.

The Registration section was readied and the Dormitory crew set up the DMC Hall using supplies from our local American Red Cross trailer.

The Kitchen group lead by Ben Klagenberg, organized a team who would later prepare a fabulous lunch using the resources that have been stocked to feed our community.

The Information and Internal Communication section made themselves ready to share news to loved ones and keep everyone informed on the status of the events as they unfolded.

The Animal Shelter staff prepared the Equestrian Center to receive and care for animals who would be affected by a disaster.

Damage Assessment Training

In January, over 60 Disaster Preparedness Volunteers came together for Damage Assessment Training. The class was conducted by Emergency Coordinator Sam Wallis of Sonoma County Fire & EMS Department. This was the second class in two years taught by Sam who has now trained over 100 Sea Ranch members in damage assessment. We are fortunate to have him share his expertise with our community.

Test Setup of TSRA's Shelter Tent

TSRA acquired a 570 sq. ft. tent for use in our disaster preparedness program. This tent was erected for the first time in August 2018 with the combined efforts of disaster preparedness program volunteers and members from TSR Security and Facilities & Resource Departments. This was a very interesting endeavor as the instructions provided were for a different system all together; this did not stop this dedicated group of individuals. The group showed great ingenuity in completing the task and providing valuable suggestions for the future task. Items found to be missing have been purchased as well as extra tools to complete the task. This tent can be used for a field hospital, covered eating area or if needed another housing area. Equestrian Center Pet Set Up

October 23, 2018


On October 23rd, 2018, TSRA Disaster Preparedness Program volunteers met to discuss and set-up the proposed Animal Shelter at the Equestrian Center. In the event of a disaster, this Animal Shelter will provide care for found pets and those needing to be sheltered should their owners require medical transport out of the area. Service Animals (not comfort animals) will be accommodated with their owners in the Equestrian Lounge. At this location, Animal Shelter volunteers will be available to assist with the feeding and exercising of the service animals.

When a disaster event warrants the opening of an Animal Shelter, we are prepared with pop-up tents, cages and some supplies. Purchase of additional supplies is budgeted for next fiscal year.

Recruitment Fair

October 2018


In October 2018, TSRA Disaster Preparedness Program held a Volunteer Recruitment Fair at Del Mar Hall. In addition to general information for the community, individuals had the opportunity to meet with their division leaders, ask questions and learn about volunteer opportunities.
